Here is a collection of questions I get asked when I tell someone I am going to Turkey as an exchange student with a NSLI-Y scholarship.  Some are more frequent than others.

  1. What is NSLI-Y and/or AFS? These programs are such a big part of my exchange, that a whole page was dedicated to them.  Check it out here.
  2. What language do people speak in Turkey? Turkish!  It is not that popular of a language, but is does use the Latin alphabet with a few extra letters.  Turkish is spoken by over 77 million people.
  3. Where is Turkey anyway? Turkey is east of Greece.  Google it.
  4. Everyone is going to wear a burqa!  Are you going to have to wear one? First off, not everyone in Turkey wears a burqa.  Therefore, no.  I am not required to wear one.
  5. Where are you staying? I am going to Samsun, Turkey.  It is right on the Black Sea and is much larger than the town I come from.  It is the 11th or 12th largest city in Turkey; about 1.2 million people.
  6. I have a question about Turkey/I applied for NSLI-Y.  How can I contact you? If you want to contact me, you can either post a comment on the blog or e-mail me (
